my golf swing is too flat, i want to swing more on plane…?
I’m a 4 handicap, I take the club on an inside path, which I know, is the cause some bad shots and my distance not being on point. I sometimes even hit it off the heel or occasionally shank my lower irons (PW, SW) I’ve tried to take the club on an outside path but I sometimes end up hitting a cut or I come over the top and pull hook it. It just doesn’t feel comfortable. my grip is on the weak side, i feel do to the club being taken so flat. Any tips or drills I can do?
Thanks. . . I’ve taken some practice swings in the mirror and I can see where the club should be. . . My problem is it feels like I’m going to hit a massive cut. . . . or it feels like I may pull it. I’ll make my grip stronger, but i know I need to put the club in the “slot” on the downswing and hit more or less the inside of the ball. Should I actually feel the club dropping at the top, kind of like laying it off?

If you have a full length mirror practice your back swing everyday. Hold it at the top and make sure your left arm is across your shoulders. Try to incorporate the same feeling on the range then just go out and play golf!
You are going to feel like your gona hit a fade at first.. but just trust it and see what happens. Release the club and your good to go.
I fell into the same pattern after a winter of swinging in tight quarters ( a low ceiling).
If you stand with your back to a wall, a few inches away and take the club to the top, you will be pretty much on plane.. Also, i read a comment from Sergio who said his swing thought was to have his left forearm over his right shoulder at the top. I use the wall method to get the feel of a good position and the Sergio thought when I play. It helped me a whole lot maybe it will help you too..
I suggest if you wish to take the club more to the outside (a great idea) that you strengthen your grip. This should help square the face at impact.
Further, the other issues you mention could be related to a breakdown in your posture during the swing. This can be caused by a loss of balance, dipping or lifting of the head and shoulders or the knees.
Work on maintaining posture along with the proper takeaway should help to correct your issues
Ok..A pretty common mistake. So you can take a shaft from a broken club or even a thin stick, and you stick it in the ground at a slanted angle (like the way you hold the club when you set up to the ball) and you put the ball under the shaft (about 2 or 3 inches from where it is in the ground) and you just swing under the shaft down to the ball. It definitely seems like you are going to hit the shaft, but you shouldn’t especially for a 4 handicap. So that should help your back-swing and also your down-swing.
Hi,
I have recently had the same issue with my swing… I was hitting the ball great with a very very flat swing plane, but I have managed to get the club on plane. What I did was mad my posture more upright (standing more up and down). This helps you take the club more vertically on the back swing. Also one other thing that I did was take the club outside just by feeling exactly that, this will get you on plane and in a better position at the top. I suggest bring a camera to the range to help you with your swing.
